ISO 9001:2000
  • Why ISO 9001?

Introduction of ISO 9001:2000 has brought about a significant change in the way which organizations are required to operate their Quality Management System. By placing a clear emphasis on customer satisfaction, management systems now define quality through the eyes of their customers. Through the implementation of a process based approach there is a radical shift from system of conformance to a system of effectiveness. Finally there is an emphasis on system development and improvement.

ISO 9001:2000 is a Quality Management System which could be implemented by an organization for the following reasons:

To demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements, and It aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement by using PDCA (Plan, Do, Check and Act) and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable regulatory requirements.

The standard recognizes that the word "product" applies to services, processed material, hardware and software intended for, or required by your customer.

The standard is applicable to every organization, whether Government, NGO or Public and Private sector involved in Services or Manufacturing.

  • Implications

To create a successful quality system it is more important to understand the considered application than referring to the words specified in the standard. The Quality Systems must be planned keeping in mind the size, culture, resources and organizational policy towards quality.

The System shall be influenced by the products, customers, industry sectors and shall be unique. The Business process should drive the structure and definition of the management system while also adhering to the standard clauses.

While defining the Quality Policy of the organization the quality should be customer focused. Gone are the days when Quality and standards were used to create brands and marketing positions. Today quality is a qualifier to stand in the competitive environment.

  • Requirements

    The standard requires:

    • Quality manual which includes the documented procedures or references to them
    • Include a descriptive documentation of the sequence and interaction of the processes that make up the quality management system.
    • The scope of the system has to be defined including the basis for the use made of the "Applications"

Overall, the effect of the requirements of the standard is to reduce the instances where documented procedures are mandatory and to allow the organization the freedom to determine the type and extent of documentation needed to support the operation of the processes that make up the quality management system.

  • Potential benefits

    These include :

    • Better process control and flow
    • Better documentation of processes
    • Opportunity to truly integrate the management system to drive and support operational performance
    • Access to new markets
    • Increased customer confidence
    • Increased efficiency and effectiveness
    • Enhanced value
    • Effective Quality Management System leads to reduced costs and greater operating margins
  • Process approach

One of the most frequent doubt and concern expressed about implications of ISO 9001 is fear of excess documentation and rewriting the total processes. There are doubts expressed about integrity and security of the systems in the hands of consultants.
